    Networking

So often, business owners say they are busy networking and go from one business breakfast to another evening drinks event but nothing ever comes of it! Meanwhile, many successful businesses say their success comes from networking! So clearly there is a serious mismatch between just turning up to various events and successfully growing…[Read more]

    • Thanks for asking about this, David. The key to success in networking is to keep turning up. Don’t expect rapid results. Spend some time learning about the other members of the network. Share useful, helpful and relevant information with them. People buy from people that they know, like and trust and this all takes time.
      With regards to your…[Read more]

    • Thank you Nigel. Your comment “Share useful, helpful and relevant information with them” is particularly helpful. I think a number of people turn up to events but neither listen well to other people nor ask perceptive questions, and so fail to engage productively with others there.

    • Another idea is to offer to give a talk. This can either be a presentation or you could do a Q&A, which means that the attendees create the event for you.

Hello Nigel. I made a decision to integrate Transpond newsletter system into my Capsule CRM. I have to say, it is very impressive. I am looking increasingly to segment using Linkedin leads I have generated. As a test for a new generation business card idea that uses serviced QR that can be changed for the client after print, I sent this…[Read more]

    • Thanks for sharing this generous offer, William. I love the way in which you are integrating print with digital marketing, so that your clients can track their customer’s engagement levels.
‘The first ever Business card with a viewer reporting system.’ 🙂

    • Who said 50% of all advertising is wasted, the trouble is which 50% ?

This way we can get great rates on 500 cards knowing they can be changed in the future and you get to see how many people actually opened and read your business card.
With this kind of logic, the same QR can be used on all stationery so the cost of print is mitigated.
      This is…[Read more]

The Chiltern Tourism Network (CTN) is a useful organisation to be involved with, well it is if you conduct your business in the Chilterns and your business is broadly in the tourism sector. I teach in the woods, and as such provide a draw fore those who might like to get out in nature. The relationship with the CTN is mutually beneficial, they…[Read more]

    • Thank you for sharing this, David. Yes, I agree with you that there are always relevant organisations that are well worthwhile joining. Some provide support, whilst others provide training and events.

You need to keep repeating your message, before you generate a response. You seldom see a TV advert just the once. You will get bored repeating it, but the customers won’t.

Ask customers to give you written feedback, i.e. by email.

Display the nice things that they say about you throughout your promotional mix.

Have a separate web page for testimonials.

Testimonials are a form of ‘social proof’.

Use them liberally within sales proposals.

If you sell to businesses, you will find that some client companies are not…[Read more]

In raising the profile of our constantly 5* gites business in France, any experiences on digital marketing accommodation and rentals would be helpful? A press release is a single item of news, that is sent to the media. Newspapers, magazines and broadcast media should not ask you for payment, when they use your story.

Here is a press release ideas checklist:

    Company launch (new startup)
Anniversary i.e. 10 years in business
Expansion i.e. new markets, new branches etc
    Office or factory…[Read more]

Success in marketing is all about taking action. The more you take the initiative and experiment, the more likely it is that you will succeed, although you may encounter failure along the way.

I have been involved in sales and marketing for over 30 years.

During this time, I have witnessed great successes and great failures.

With regards to finding B2B clients, you can either chase after them using a sales based approach or get them to come to you, using an in-bound marketing strategy. Alternatively, you can use the two approaches in combination with each other.

SEO, for example, when done correctly, can generate a steady stream of in-bound sales enquiries. Email…[Read more]

How many promotional techniques are you using? Which techniques are working well for you? Do you feel that you should drop any of them? Do you have any questions about your promotional mix?

  • William Nicholls posted an update in the group Group logo of PromotionPromotion 4 months, 3 weeks ago

Examples such as a doctors or a dentists waiting room, or a busy open space, maybe a shop window or an airport lounge. How effective could old fashioned call to action posters or leaflets be in this strange new world of dynamic QR codes when people are on their smartphones all day long ?
I have a suspicion that QR administrators think that QR is free.

    • I think that someone should start a campaign to show people how to read and use QR codes, William. It is a bit like ‘xerography’ (photocopying) in the early days. Decision makers would say: “What is wrong with carbon paper?”

    • But the crazy thing is that jo public know how to use it. What is clear is that a QR campaign with quality print and copy is probably going to be the most successful. I think that the QR job is given to techies who have absolutely zero idea how to implement it. Its time the printing industry got its act together !
      Full circle I say

    • Interesting William, we might know we can scan a QR with our phone – but do we need to use a QR reader app, is it built into the camera on Android and Apple? I don’t know, perhaps others don’t either! I haven’t scanned a QR in years, so I thought I’d pick up one of the many pieces of marketing collateral in my office / home, and I couldn’t find…[Read more]

    • Interesting, David. I imagine that Millennials know all about QR codes, however, I don’t think that every older smartphone user has this knowledge. Perhaps there is a PR angle for William here, whereby he could catch the attention of journalists and explain how it all works (and of course mention his services along the way).

PR is a remarkably effective way of generating brand awareness, as long as you can find interesting stories to share with the media.
I ran a PR agency for nine years and we made startups and small businesses much more visible. In addition, we also worked with larger enterprises, helping them to turn their PR results around.
