  • hello Nigel, what’s your view about the difference between using LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram posts for a business like mine?

    • Hi Walter, The three platforms have many differences. I would focus on LinkedIn, as it is the world’s largest B2B business networking platform. You can share blogs, articles, media coverage and hints and tips there – however – sales come from 1:1 messages with buyers. People are on LinkedIn to find new jobs and promote their enterprises, so the…[Read more]

Nigel, you asked me to post the details of the free Empathy Styles Quick Quiz that members of the Marketing Compass can access to get their strong Empathy Styles scores. It only takes 5 minutes to answer 21 simple questions and you’ll get an instant email response with your strong scores, communication and relationship preferences. As well as how…[Read more]

Nigel, last year we subscribed to the CPD (Continuing Professional Development) Service which allows us to award a number of CPD points for those courses that have been accredited. We’ve done this for a year now, for our online instructor-led presentations course, but it has produced little result. I believe that there are lots of professionals o…[Read more]

    • Hi Walter, here are some ideas for you.
1). Write a press release and send this out to relevant media, include HR / Personnel magazines etc.
2). Create a ‘CPD points’ landing page within your website.
3). Contact the CPD service and see how they can help you.
      4) Talk to relevant professional bodies that use CPD and tell them that you are…[Read more]

Thanks Nigel. All that sounds very wise! I’ll have a proper look tomorrow. Just looking at the Google Stats, just in, it tells us that we had 201 users visit the website in May, with a bounce rate of 77% and a average duration stay of 51 seconds. But no enquiries. Frustrating, but we will implement your ideas… Thanks again…

We are experiencing high bounce rates on our website http://www.presentingsuccess.co.uk – between 65 and 80% sometimes – with few enquiries. Any ideas about what we can do to change this, please?

    • There are several causes underlying high bounce rates. Here are three of them:
      1. Page loading speed. If a page takes too long to load, visitors can give up and go away. Your site should load quickly on desktops, laptops and mobile devices.
      2. Easy to understand content. This is a big topic, however, if people are put off at first glance, this w…[Read more]

    • Thanks, Walter. There are two issues: Technical and Marketing. The technical stuff includes website loading speed, website responsiveness (i.e. how it looks on a mobile phone); and a long list of other technicalities i.e. image file sizes. The marketing side of things includes segmentation, SEO (are you bringing the right type of visitor to your…[Read more]

Thanks, Nigel. Yes, I think the special offer angle is one we’ll probably go for… tvm

  • hello Nigel, we’ve got a list of about 1800 email addresses, some are associates (you included, I think!) as well as other business contacts and a few hundred names that we’ve bought. We’re looking to clean this database so that people are opting in. Any suggestions as to content or structure of the email that we could send, please?

    • Hi Walter, This is a tricky area as few people optin to newsletters when asked to do so via an email. If you are going to do this exercise, then I would send batches of emails in order to see what happens. You would need to write about the benefits of opting into your list. What, precisely, will they gain if they sign up? Saying that they will…[Read more]

    • Special offers are a key reason why consumers subscribe to company newsletters, Walter. I think that this also works for B2B marketers. As I know you know, I am not keen on discounting (race to the bottom etc); however, you could say that they will be the first to hear about new courses, special guest speakers, the latest research, free workshop…[Read more]

I’ve created an online real-time presentations course which is accredited by the CPD, so it’s worth 10 CPD points to anyone who completes it. I believe that it would be of value to many people who need to accumulate their annual CPD points. One of my associates mentioned that his accountant spent hours looking for valuable courses which were CPD…[Read more]

    • Thanks for asking this question, Walter. Well done on creating this course and for the official CPD recognition. Here are some ideas for you:
      1. I suggest that you create website landing pages aimed at each market segment (i.e. accountants). This is a ‘pull’ marketing strategy. Use long form body copy and run through a checklist of SEO points…[Read more]

    • Thank you, Walter. By the way, the more you write, the more you sell. Google likes to see detailed, long form copy. I also suggest that you create a benefits list (if you haven’t already done so) and continually refer to this.

  • I write quite a few articles but am unsure of how to use hashtags in them/at the end. Is there a quick descriptor you could give me, of the value of using them, and how to do it, please?

    • I suggest that you create an alphabetical list of hashtags and keep them somewhere accessible. The list should include your name, your brand name, product names as well as generic hashtags such as #presentationskills and #salestraining
Having written an article (or a blog) I imagine that you share it within LinkedIn and Twitter. As I know you know…[Read more]

Thanks Nigel, (happy to have a go, as you say, provided I don’t have to lick and stick the stamps on a few thousand envelopes – but I guess I’m showing my age!)

  • What are your views about direct mail marketing these days, Nigel? About 20 years ago we ran a fairly successful postcard campaign and are considering doing it again. many thanks, Walter

    • Interesting question, Walter. In general terms, there is less DM than there used to be, following the rise of the internet*. On this basis, you could argue that a well presented DM piece will stand out.
If I was in your shoes, I would create a personalised letter (or postcard), referencing the (potential) client and their situation.
      As I know you…[Read more]

Thanks Ken. It’s frustrating, but no point in complaining, I guess. Just gotta find a better way. And I’m conscious I owe you an article….. is there a deadline?

Ok, boss, I’ll have a go at that. Thanks very much…

  • We don’t have a marketing plan, Nigel. More just working from hand to mouth, as it were, or fingers to keyboard. And a big ‘plan’ won’t work with me, I’ll get confused. It needs to be simple and workable. What would be a good place to start, please?

    • Start by listing the market segments that you wish to communicate with, on the basis that marketing is all about customers.
A market segment = a group of people with shared needs.
Describe a typical member of each segment.
I suggest that you do this within a Google Drive document so that there is one plan in one place.

    • Ok, boss, I’ll have a go at that. Thanks very much…

    • 🙂

    • Hi Walter!

It seems to me that marketing is as much about ‘matchmaking’ as anything else! ie linking up a customer with needs to someone/a business who meets those needs. The more specific we can be about both the customer and also the business the better. The ‘customer need’ AND also the ‘service provided’ might not be as obvious as we assume.…[Read more]

  • Nigel, we’ve been using Facebook advertising to promote our online public speaking course but although we’re getting lots of views – in the thousands – we’ve still got no business! We’re planning to have a look at Instagram as an alternative. What would be your advice, please?

    • Could you please let me know the targeting criteria for the different adverts? FB offers considerable flexibility with regards to demographic profiling, location etc. I suspect that this may be to do with your landing page(s). Please share a landing page url (or several of them) with me (one url per comment).

    • Have had a similar experience recently of lots of views but no take up of a survey we offered.

    • Thanks Ken. It’s frustrating, but no point in complaining, I guess. Just gotta find a better way. And I’m conscious I owe you an article….. is there a deadline?
