I write quite a few articles but am unsure of how to use hashtags in them/at the end. Is there a quick descriptor you could give me, of the value of using them, and how to do it, please?

    • I suggest that you create an alphabetical list of hashtags and keep them somewhere accessible. The list should include your name, your brand name, product names as well as generic hashtags such as #presentationskills and #salestraining
Having written an article (or a blog) I imagine that you share it within LinkedIn and Twitter. As I know you know…[Read more]

Thanks David. I’m glad that your marketing is working for you. Well done! We’ve got more to do, obviously…

Thanks Nigel, (happy to have a go, as you say, provided I don’t have to lick and stick the stamps on a few thousand envelopes – but I guess I’m showing my age!)

What are your views about direct mail marketing these days, Nigel? About 20 years ago we ran a fairly successful postcard campaign and are considering doing it again. many thanks, Walter

    • Interesting question, Walter. In general terms, there is less DM than there used to be, following the rise of the internet*. On this basis, you could argue that a well presented DM piece will stand out.
If I was in your shoes, I would create a personalised letter (or postcard), referencing the (potential) client and their situation.
      As I know you…[Read more]

Thanks Ken. It’s frustrating, but no point in complaining, I guess. Just gotta find a better way. And I’m conscious I owe you an article….. is there a deadline?

Ok, boss, I’ll have a go at that. Thanks very much…

  • We don’t have a marketing plan, Nigel. More just working from hand to mouth, as it were, or fingers to keyboard. And a big ‘plan’ won’t work with me, I’ll get confused. It needs to be simple and workable. What would be a good place to start, please?

    • Start by listing the market segments that you wish to communicate with, on the basis that marketing is all about customers.
A market segment = a group of people with shared needs.
Describe a typical member of each segment.
I suggest that you do this within a Google Drive document so that there is one plan in one place.

    • Ok, boss, I’ll have a go at that. Thanks very much…

    • 🙂

    • Hi Walter!

It seems to me that marketing is as much about ‘matchmaking’ as anything else! ie linking up a customer with needs to someone/a business who meets those needs. The more specific we can be about both the customer and also the business the better. The ‘customer need’ AND also the ‘service provided’ might not be as obvious as we assume.…[Read more]

  • Nigel, we’ve been using Facebook advertising to promote our online public speaking course but although we’re getting lots of views – in the thousands – we’ve still got no business! We’re planning to have a look at Instagram as an alternative. What would be your advice, please?

    • Could you please let me know the targeting criteria for the different adverts? FB offers considerable flexibility with regards to demographic profiling, location etc. I suspect that this may be to do with your landing page(s). Please share a landing page url (or several of them) with me (one url per comment).

    • Have had a similar experience recently of lots of views but no take up of a survey we offered.

    • Thanks Ken. It’s frustrating, but no point in complaining, I guess. Just gotta find a better way. And I’m conscious I owe you an article….. is there a deadline?

  • I’ve created a virtual real-time presentations course which is great for young people, maybe just into or out of Uni, and into their professional role. We’ve got CPD accreditation for it, having a value of 10 hours. Have several great testimonials. And offering it for £140 per person, at the moment. I believe there are lots of people who would…[Read more]

Thanks Nigel. One of the 7 ‘styles’ in the Empathy Styles model is the Engineer, who believes that once they’ve told you something, then you must know, and remember it (‘don’t you remember I sent you a 3 page email about that a month ago…) Of course, anyone else who doesn’t have Engineer, knows this isn’t true, and that the rule of 7 times…[Read more]

  • I’ve created an online Virtual Public Speaking Course – 5 x 2-hour weekly sessions. Ideal for a nervous public speaker or those who want to be better. Great results from 2 pilot courses.

Morning Nigel, thanks for asking. The newsletter went out to about 1500 people on our database. So far about 17% have opened it, which is slightly down from what we’d normally get – (think the highest has been just over 20% – we’ve done the newsletter/blog for about a year on a fortnightly basis). And it will have been circulated more widely than…[Read more]

Thanks, Nigel. Just working on that email now. I’m going to focus on the basics of the impression you make on the phone and online – (just for us) stop working in the kitchen in your pyjamas! Ok, you may have no choice about the kitchen, but you can control what’s around you, and what you wear. I may do one on online presentations next week.…[Read more]

Thanks Nigel, very good idea. We’re going to do that in one of our Walter’s Thursday Thoughts tomorrow, offering a free hour or so helping them with anything presentational, so’s to speak – maybe looking at their sales presentation online. It is hard not to just think about the Now, and the next few weeks. Was on a networking group call this…[Read more]

  • Hi Nigel, I’m just completing a book How to deliver a business presentation, and Survive! It’s fairly significant (one of my associates described it as a manual) – about 11,000 words over 45 pages, waiting for graphics and proper layout etc. My question is, should I give it away, in exchange for an email address to build the list, or look to sell…[Read more]
