Just getting more familiar with Linked In, a couple of questions:

    1. How do you add the hyperlinks to other linked in members in posts, and

    2. In some posts there is a clickable link hust below the photograph to additional information. How are these added, are these articles ?

    Many thanks.
    2.

    • Hi Chris, With regards to adding hyperlinks, they always have to contain the full URL (web page address). For example, all of the https:// part, otherwise the link will not work. I think that within your first question, you are referring to Comments? If that is the case, write the text and copy in the full URL of the relevant web page.
      I think…[Read more]

Hi Marcom, setting up the new blog page | business-compass.com/blog | editing the posts, the upfront text remains the original rough text. Only clicking though the image shows the correct new test. This should be out front. Suggestions?

  • Dear Nigel

I am working with a mentee who wants to start up a business to promote financial literacy in low income black families. His idea is based on an app as well as physical playing cards. He is thinking BIG and is a great articulate young black entrepreneur in his 20s.

Before getting into designing apps etc, I am suggesting that he pauses…[Read more]

    • Very interesting, David. In general terms, I have found that entrepreneurs tend to dive in at the deep end, with an idea for a product or service. I like your questions. The key thing is to actually ask a cross section of potential customers what they think of the idea. Does finance interest them? What do they already know? Which financial…[Read more]

Hi Ken @dml2012 We are using ‘The Events Calendar’ WordPress plugin within our Events page: https://www.marketingcompass.co.uk/events
Once an event has happened, it automatically updates the page (one less thing to worry about).
The Events Calendar is the most popular plugin of this type and it is free to use.

From my last direct mail exercise, the overall numbers are in. Most relevant here is the sheer number of ‘lost’ contacts since my last mail at the end of the year. My list was 13,941 contacts, its reduced to 11,054 after dead mail addresses and unsubscribes are removed, (you do follow the GDPR rules don’t you), a reduction to 81% which is a lot…[Read more]

    • Interestingly, this seems to be following the 80 / 20 rule Ken. Over 11K contacts is a good number and, as you say, it is a numbers game. The more frequently you mail, the better it should become (double check everything!)

Goggle Site Kit (which you gave me the heads up to) shows me that 40% of my traffic is organic and 46% is direct. Very little from social media as I’m not big in doing “meaningful” updates, finding inspiration in short supply. Is there an ideal spread of traffic, or given that some of the 40% will be recommendations and the

    • If you are looking for new business, David, I think that a higher percentage of organic traffic (i.e. coming in from search engines) is a good think. I suggest a target figure of 60% organic. People that already know you will type your website address into their browser and this equates to direct traffic. As I know you know, there are always…[Read more]

I was asked about how I use Instagram by someone who is about to start using it for their business. These work for me: post your photos / short videos, those that relate / are relevant to what you do, say something interesting about them, perhaps ask a question if pertinent, add a selection of relevant hashtags either in the main post or in a…[Read more]

    • Hi David, Thanks for sharing this: most interesting. In general terms, for small businesses, I have found that Instagram is good news for B2C (Business to Consumer) enterprises. Clearly, images are a big factor on Instagram and it helps if you have an eye for this.

    Hello Nigel

Would you recommend GoCardless which sets up direct debits to collect client payments (or a similar service perhaps PayPal)?

I reluctantly agreed to pay by GoCardless for two services I use. I did so only because I was told I could only have the service provided I paid by GoCardless.

    Thank you.

    David

    • I have looked at their website David and this looks like an interesting service. Who owns them and what banking guarantees do they offer? I like the 1% / 20p per transaction pricing.

    • Generally GoCardless seems popular as long as you don’t get a problem along the way. Some reviews are discouraging when it comes to resolution of issues. As an accountant for a client who uses GoCardless, I have discovered that things are a little more complicated ‘back of house’ in the double entry than I was expecting!

    Hi Nigel.

In a recent conversation, you were telling me of the value of having a website domain name that describes the service offered. Eg an accountant might have http://www.easyaccounts.co.uk. Can you say a bit more about how to choose appropriate words please? How might such a new website link in to the original website of the business?

    Many thanks.

    David

    • Get into the mind of the searcher. How would they describe what they are looking for? Enter some of these phrases into Google and see what the search volumes are like. You are looking for popular two-word phrases. Satellite sites can link back to a primary website and vice versa using anchor text links:…[Read more]

When it comes to digital marketing, think about how everything integrates. This can make your marketing machine much more powerful. Well known platforms tend to offer direct integration using APIs, whilst others can be connected via third party apps. If you are already doing this, what have you connected and what are the benefits?
