While its quiet in this post-furnace summer, revisiting governance and security for the smaller business. What currently stresses you as a member about protecting your business? Recession, tax, cyber threats, what?

    • One of our member’s had their website hacked and we did everything that we could to get them back up and running quickly. There appeared to be no reason that the hackers did this: perhaps it was an automated / random attack?

    • That’s awful, it’s so important to consider how you might recover your systems in case of an attack – good job getting them back up and running, it’s a worry, and is best reviewed periodically.

In raising the profile of our constantly 5* gites business in France, any experiences on digital marketing accommodation and rentals would be helpful? We have relied on the airBnB types until now and kept a simple placeholder web site. • Hi Ken, Here are some ideas for you:
      1. I suggest that you do some PR. Here is a free-to-use UK based media information website: https://media.info
You could use your CRM (i.e. Capsule) to build a media contacts list and send them stories. If you would like some ideas on PR stories, please ask within a separate post.
      2. I know what you mean about…[Read more]

Have any of us passed! We have an interesting comparison in France with the film industry. Every cinema ticket sold pays a few centimes to a fund to help new film producers get going. The result is a lot of films that should never be made, and a very few that make it. If the tax-payer investment protections for start-ups were removed in the UK,…[Read more]

With so many smaller businesses here, this recent research into start-up failures may a useful guide to the risks we face. It stacks up with previous experiences so worth passing along. https://www.failory.com/blog/startup-failure-rate

    • Thank you for sharing this. A 90% failure rate for startups is quite intimidating!

    • I worked in the Franchise industry from 1996 to 2002.
One of the pitches at Franchise shows was.
“90% of business start ups go out of business within 3 years and 90% of those surviving businesses go out of business within the next 3 years”
Franchisee stats are quite dramatically better then that.
But i still never trust Franchisors, their pre…[Read more]

Not sure if paper or digital yet. The need is for someone who could read the first draft as a some of it will be contentious to HMG? Plus, the World Bank may want that as a condition of my ability to use their materials as sources. All up in the air a bit at the moment.

Hi, does anyone know of a lawyer who specialises in publications?

    • Hi Ken, Thanks for asking this question. Are you referring to setting up a publication? Would this be print or digital?
PS I will ask some of my legal contacts for you, if you can clarify your requirements. 🙂

anyone experience of this strategy? Have been working on Risk and Security for this digital world, and intensive experiences with customer work since last December, speaks strongly of going against the prevailing wisdoms and services. Disputing/challenging everything and bucking the trends looks to be the way forward. Any views on the risks and…[Read more]

For those colleagues with video aspirations. Have been working on video shorts to go with my App and governance work. Being lazy to go through the ‘tedious’ script production exercise, I set up a method using a new online transcription service. https://otter.ai/home So far, the transcripts of quality voice-recordings have been 99% and very good.…[Read more]

Its all about Apps once again. Rather, the Weboo/FlipLet people I work with have now thrown open their basic app builder account drops from £50 to $9.90 per month. No excuse now not to experiment on what this could do for your business or professionally.

Experience with Zoho cloud CRM? As in does anyone have experience with using it – good, bad or ugly? Thanks

    • We used the Zoho CRM system for several years, Ken. It is very good, if perhaps a little complicated. We subsequently moved to Capsule CRM.

    • I took Nigel’s advice a long time ago with Capsule CRM. Zapier has changed all integrations, but a single click to integrate Gmail, Xero, Circleloop telephony, Mailchimp and Wufoo smart form pages has been a game changer. thank you Nigel

    • Thank you for your kind words, William. The combination of cloud based marketing, sales, communication and accounting apps is indeed a powerful. 🙂

Hi, e-book finally got sorted last week to publish on Lulu.com. Went through the process which now includes an ISBN number (saved me £70). Because the printed original was on Quark Express 2006 vintage and obsolete, it needed electronic recovery. Unfortunately, the heavy formatting didn’t carry forward into the e.pub file format, so it was…[Read more]

Hi, This App publication game is fun isn’t it! Amazon rejected the App under a content policy failure, “because it would confuse users”! Apple still grinding slowly, they did something to resolve a faulty account record so I can now manually submit an App. The automatic and preferred route still doesn’t work. My foolhardy plan for two weeks to…[Read more]

A bit more about Apps. Wrote eight days back about problems with Apple and submitting my app. Their computer got confused and kept ‘failing’ my App’s code, then decided I didn’t own the trading name someone else did. Having started the ‘change my status’ process, nothing had happened so I chased up Apple support (yes they have real people you can…[Read more]
