I confess to finding the concept of blocks a bit of a challenge to a simple lad like me, particularly as all I wanted to do was simply update existing pages. I did do some reading which helped make more sense of it but the plugin allows me to switch between editors.…[Read more]

The Essex air was BLUE last week when I discovered that the latest version of WordPress, changed the editor. No more WYSIWYG. It seemed a classic case of “it ain’t” broke”. Not sure if anyone has come across this yet but my own Genie of the web pointed me to a plugin called “Classic Editor”. It does what it says on the tin and restores the…[Read more]

    • I think that you are referring to WordPress 5.0 which is based on the use of content blocks. It has had some teething problems and yes, there is a learning curve, however it does look like an easy to use Content Management System.

    • My site was upgraded to V5 recently so I logged into the CMS to see what it looks like.
It looks like it always did during V4.
So I asked the webmaster if I will see changes to the CMS as described by David.

He said this – “No, the only thing that would change is if you start using the block editor. From everything that we’ve seen and heard on…[Read more]

Yes I still have a pulse…so I was told yesterday. I hope things are good with you all in Maidenhead.
Yes I have long extolled the benefits of Vimeo and believe that using both is the ideal solution. Vimeo content can be updated (replaced) without changing the URL and embedded with full control whilst. YouTube is a no brainer for SEO but now that…[Read more]

Do you use embedded YouTube video on your website?
I discovered by accident last night that as of Nov 18, there is no way to disable playing related video (AKA cr@p) from a YouTube EMBEDDED video. A Google policy change is to “share” content.

In the early days, adding “?rel=0” in the embed code, prevented all the cr@p at the end.
    Then YouTube[Read more]

    • Thank you for sharing the solution to this challenge, quite some time ago David! I encountered it again recently and realised that you can no longer disable the playing of related videos, at the end of your video. This is why I have returned to Vimeo, which you can begin to use for free. (Nice to hear from you, by the way).

  • Is it “professional” not to have a domain name? Would you deal with a business who used a gmail address and a mobile as their contact details. I was at a Chamber of Commerce breakfast and the list of attendees and guests is circulated. I was somewhat taken aback to see a guest purporting to be an IFA with a hotmail email address as well as another…[Read more]

    • Personally, I agree with you David. I think that this is to do with one’s brand. Is ‘brand’ important? What does it mean and what does it say about you? I think that having a domain name and associated email address says: “I have thought about this and I want you to remember me and to be able to find me easily; having found me, I want you to be…[Read more]

Thank you for the “heads up”. It looks as though the problem is now resolved with help and explanation from postmaster @ btinternet – impressed at their prompt response.

I am using Fast Secure Contact Form for WordPress. In the past two weeks BTinternet where my domain email is directed to, has started bouncing as Spam. (Even my test sends).Odd/disturbing things have been written about a change of ownership etc of the plugin but it was working fine in early May.. Any recommended alternatives that BTinternet wont…[Read more]

Happy to contribute. As you had mentioned Vimeo as an option and as I have a few minutes to spare (before nurse comes) I thought I would expand on why I consider VIMEO is better for embedding than YouTube. Forget the freebee, Vimeo Plus is adequate for most businesses and at Just £72 a year is affordable. Vimeo Pro and beyond are for power…[Read more]

Adding to my post above, The ameded embedded code WILL NOT UPDATE on your webpage, you will have to login into WordPress or the HTML and change as above.

What you are seeing currently at the end of the EMBEDDED video are suggested videos, AKA 12 Bore Crap that YouTube adds! To fix this, select your channel, (it’s accessible from where your name is top right)
Now select the video, and select SHARE and now EMBED.
UNTICK show related video. Your embed code will now change so that the end of the URL…[Read more]

I have over the years, worked on projects where clients had made “concepts”. They can be useful but I see few that look good enough for business promotion. There are several products that are similar to Magisto and I’m sure in the right hands and with decent assets (footage/photos/audio) it can do a job. HOWEVER, anything you do for your business…[Read more]

I’m afraid I bin the offers. Have steered clear- hardly ever click on paid listings…which I believe is the norm.

Interesting. There are lots of things I could/should do better, admin wise. but my passion for my work is always paramount. On Saturday, I had finally been sent the logo for a show, from the graphic designer who designed the poster, I was working on in a layered form, so that I could do some simple animation and tricks. I doodled on the laptop on…[Read more]

I do have plans for some updates and marketing orientated work. Ironically, this morning I had to have two new tyres fitted and one of my clients who I did some work with earlier in the year is in the unit next door. While I was pondering a “just happened to be next door” cold call, the sandwich van arrived and out came a couple of the guys. Next…[Read more]

Some phones have an editing programme built in that lets you do “a top and tail” along with other tweaks. Alternatively you download it to your PC and edit in Windows Movie Maker or on a Mac IMovie. (These are free and capable) The main issue is that both require re-encoding which if not done correctly will give poor results. The biggest issue…[Read more]
