Thank you Nigel. Your comment “Share useful, helpful and relevant information with them” is particularly helpful. I think a number of people turn up to events but neither listen well to other people nor ask perceptive questions, and so fail to engage productively with others there.

    Networking

So often, business owners say they are busy networking and go from one business breakfast to another evening drinks event but nothing ever comes of it! Meanwhile, many successful businesses say their success comes from networking! So clearly there is a serious mismatch between just turning up to various events and successfully growing…[Read more]

    • Thanks for asking about this, David. The key to success in networking is to keep turning up. Don’t expect rapid results. Spend some time learning about the other members of the network. Share useful, helpful and relevant information with them. People buy from people that they know, like and trust and this all takes time.
      With regards to your…[Read more]

    • Another idea is to offer to give a talk. This can either be a presentation or you could do a Q&A, which means that the attendees create the event for you.

To mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, I wrote this blog where I suggest that Her Majesty’s character of service is an example that all business leaders would do well to follow –

What can the Platinum Jubilee teach businesses?

Thank you Nigel. I agree about LinkedIn. I am inundated with connection requests from salespeople with whom I have no connection at all!
    David

  • My focus in terms of marketing time has varied quite a lot. The shape of the effort has changed over the last few years.

    • Prior to Covid, I spent a lot of time networking, much of which has been less productive than I had hoped. Some networking has though brought me clients.
    • Also, prior to Covid, I spent a fair bit of time writing blogs whi…[Read more]

    • Thanks for sharing this, David. Yes, I understand your point about networking. It is time consuming and somewhat haphazard. However, when I used to do it regularly, I also found some clients that way.
I think that you should keep going with the blogs, partly because ‘Google loves a blogger’. 🙂
I like your blog ‘long form’ opinion / thought pieces.…[Read more]

  • Customer journey workshop – The perfect client

Having now run my consultancy, tax and accounting practice for five years I would describe my ‘perfect client’ thus:

 They recognise they have a BUSINESS, TAX or ACCOUNTING problem and it is a SIGNIFICANT issue for them (ie they experience ‘pain’).

 They actually want the issue FIXED (I have dis…[Read more]

    • Thank you for sharing this, David. It is most interesting. Looking at the top of the list, I suggest that you update your case studies within your website. There are some there, however, it would appear that they go back to May 2021. As I know you know, people love stories. A good case study describes what the problem was, why they decided to…[Read more]

  • Hi Nigel

Re Marketing Compass workshops, I wonder if a workshop on the ‘Customer journey’ might be useful to members.

Eg Something like “How To Make A Customer Journey Map In 7 Steps”

    Step 1: Set your targets
    Step 2: Create buyer personas
Step 3: Identify motivations and pain points
Step 4: Map out the buyer’s journey
    Step 5: Maximize…[Read more]

    Hello all

Two things to report on recent marketing activity:

1.My recent focus has been on a ‘change management’ podcast where I was a guest talking about ‘Encouraging innovation in business’.

The originator created a LinkedIn post about it. I have taken the originator’s post about the podcast on LinkedIn and shared it to my LinkedIn network.…[Read more]

    • Hi David, Well done with regards to the podcast and LinkedIn post (I have commented on this). You have done a great job and I think that this will help to build brand awareness for you.
Also, thank you for sharing your thoughts with regards to sales enquiries. If you are not already doing so, I suggest that you ask a series of open questions…[Read more]

In the feast or famine oscillation of self-employment I find I am inundated with work just at the moment. I am though actively advocating these ‘gaining new client techniques’ with some clients who are appreciative of them. I am also sending some short emails to contacts enquiring how they. I also give a hyperlink to a relevant article if I can…[Read more]

    Yes please!

  • New clients have come from:

    • Articles on LinkedIn or blogs I have written on my website.
    • Asking existing clients if they know of friends/colleagues that I might help. (Existing clients have given me a daughter, a son, a mother, and two work colleagues).
    • Asking questions of potential clients and being interested in their business and issue…[Read more]

  • A perennial question for firms in the professional services field is around pricing. Clients often want to know the cost before they have even uttered their question which is invariably vague! A frequent ploy by potential clients who approach firms is to get as much free advice as possible. Most of us are guilty of this in some way – we all want t…[Read more]

    • Thanks for asking about pricing for professional services, David. I suggest that you have annual turnover and profit targets.
You can divide them by 12 (or 11!) in order to give yourself a monthly target.
There are 22 working days in the average month, however, realistically, you can only bill about 15 days per month. Therefore, divide your…[Read more]

    • I would add that early on in the conversation with a client, you should tell them that you are not the cheapest service out there. The reasons for this include your XX years of experience and the fact that you have worked with many other similar clients who have been delighted with the results.

    • Many thanks Nigel – very helpful ideas.

Thank you. I very much like the “visualisation of working with you” concept. You have also spoken of the power of the seller’s ‘brand’. For a small purchaser of accountancy services PwC have a fantastic brand but are ridiculously expensive. The seller’s brand can of course include important factors such as timeliness of service and friendliness of…[Read more]

I was recently invited to take on a significant project at a nominal fee for a worthwile cause. I declined it (slightly reluctantly) and was amazed at how relieved I felt as a result!

  • Hello Marketing Compass

One of the challenges I have working in professional services (chartered accountant and business adviser) is in winning work. Like most professionals, I hope I deliver quality work but this takes time and effort. All too often professional advice is seen as a commodity and there is a race to the bottom with fees. A certain…[Read more]

    • Hi David, Thanks for asking this question. During telephone conversations with prospective clients, ask open questions in order to get them talking. Continue to ask open questions in order to find out more about their situation. Then ask: “If there was a way for you to resolve this issue, would you like to find out more?” The key at this stage is…[Read more]
