    Hello Nigel

What three things did you wish you had known 30 years ago when you started out?

    Thnak you.

    David

    • 1. Spend more time reading books.
      2. Ignore people that make you feel bad.
      3. Don’t ask if you can help: be helpful.

    Evening Nigel,

Do you have some suggestions please as to the different ways of getting maximum media coverage?

    Many thanks.

    David

    • Following our discussion, once you start to receive media coverage, I suggest that you have a separate web page for this.
It could be called Media, or PR.
When a piece of editorial appears, add this to the top of the list in the above mentioned page. Include the media title and the appearance date.
Link to the relevant website (i.e. Financial…[Read more]

  • Evening Nigel

A follow up question to Patreon. My client is suggesting two tiers at say £5 per month and £15 per month. Psychologically, should though we have three levels at say £2, £5 and £15 with the expectation that people will opt for the middle one? What is the wisdom on this one?

    Thank you.

    David

    • Interesting question, David. One school of thought says: keep it simple.
On this basis, 2 options sounds good.
Think of McDonald’s: ‘Would you like to supersize?’
This is a straightforward binary decision.
The next step offers 3 options.
Online, this is often: Free | Inexpensive | Premium
The free option can bring many more customers on…[Read more]

    Afternoon Nigel

A client is about to launch a series of monthly podcasts on the ‘Meaningful Life’. He will do so using the Patreon.com platform.

I am drafting the content for his Patreon page and also drafting a landing page (which will also be a page in his main existing website) for him.

What is the key messaging I should include in the Pat…[Read more]

  • Hi Nigel

What are the key steps in an effective email marketing strategy? What are the mistakes to avoid in implementing it?

    Many thanks.

    David

    • * I have found that building your own list, a subscriber at a time, works well
      * Use a well known platform such as MailChimp, as it connects to everything
      * Ensure that you have your signup form on every page of your website
      * Display your Privacy Policy clearly
      * Send out regular campaigns (at least once per month)
      * Write useful, interesting and…[Read more]

    Hi Nigel

We know that copywriting is an art.

    (a) What are the tricks and pitfalls in writing engaging quality material that people actual want to read?!

    (b) What are the suggested lengths for differerent sorts of articles?

    (c) Is there a suggested frequency for publishing articles?

    Thank you.

    David

    • Hi David, Be authentic when you write. Use short sentences. Include precise figures. Tell stories. Be useful and helpful. Share your knowledge. Write your copy with a real customer in mind and make it conversational.
A blog can be 350 words and up. A case study can be 600 words. A technical article can be in the order of 800 words, although longer…[Read more]

    Hi Walter!

It seems to me that marketing is as much about ‘matchmaking’ as anything else! ie linking up a customer with needs to someone/a business who meets those needs. The more specific we can be about both the customer and also the business the better. The ‘customer need’ AND also the ‘service provided’ might not be as obvious as we assume.…[Read more]

    Hi Nigel

A SEO question – What are the practical (ie nitty gritty) things to do when drafting and posting a blog on a WordPress website, adding it to LinkedIn and Twitter etc for maximum SEO effect? What are the things do in the back-end of WordPress to maximise SEO effectiveness? Do you recommend any specific WordPress plug-ins?

    Thank you.

    David

    • Focus on a single keyword phrase for each blog.
Ensure that the phrase is in the URL, Headline (wrapped in H1 tags) and the Title Tag. WordPress does this for you automatically.
Include the phrase in the first sentence of your text and repeat it a few times in the bodycopy.
Within social media, include the exact SEO phrase.
      Within WordPress, use…[Read more]

I have a new client who has a simple business plan but no marketing strategy. He is short of time and resources. What would you say are the essentials to include in a simple marketing strategy?

  • Morning Nigel

I have had an enquiry from a potential tax client for a modest piece of work. He found me via a google search. I am thinking of the marketing aspect of my proposal. Is a proposal in the body of an email OK for instance? How far should I push myself? I will send it by email to you.

    Thanks.

    Hello Nigel,

My colleague in the SME Strategies network, Sean Hackemann, has just created a new website (built by Jay Downing) for his accountancy practice – https://sas.your-new.site/

It is not live yet. What feedback would you give on it?

At present it does not have any links to the SME Strategies website. How do you think that my strategic…[Read more]
