Hi Nigel. Many thanks for this. I’ll have a think…
Which do you think are the most popular domains after .com?

  • Bette Gray Fow posted an update in the group Group logo of WebsitesWebsites 6 months, 3 weeks ago

I’ve just bought a .com domain name for a new venture. Do you think I should be buying up all the variants (.co.uk , .org etc) as well? Prices seem to have gone up, so it would be quite an ongoing expense over time. Or is it important, to stop people looking for my business getting confused or ending up on a competitor’s site?

    • This is a ‘budget’ consideration, Bette. Ideally, it is a good idea to purchase the most popular TLD (Top Level Domain) variants. You can then direct them to the .com website. What is more, this stops competitors, or at least slows them down a bit, if they wish to emulate you.
PS We have added this post to the ‘Websites’ group. Going forwards,…[Read more]

    • I would say: .co.uk | .biz | .net | and another one is .pro

Apologies for not being clear with my question. I wasn’t going to simply use social media, but am planning on a simple website to establish my presence online. I guess I was surprised when I followed a link to Andrew Bailey who specialises in pricing and negotiating, only to find his website was an “under construction” page, and that there…[Read more]

Thanks, Nigel. I think you’re right. No point pretending not to be me!

  • As a follow-up to the question I posted earlier in the websites group, I keep getting unsolicited emails from people wanting to design an App for my company. Does this mean that I need to invest in a separate App rather than a website that is set up to work well with mobile phones? When Web Wordsmith was launched several years ago, Apps were not around!

    • Apps are very interesting and several of our members have experience with them. At this stage, I would focus on your website(s). If you approach this in the right way, you can attract paying customers who are looking for what you do. You are already paying for website hosting etc and an App would be an additional cost.

    • Thanks for brining this to my attention Nigel. Bette my website is http://www.pricewithoutfear.com the previous one is now not active however it does look like I need to change the ‘holding’ page, thanks for letting me know. If you want to discuss anything please let me know and I can send you a copy of the book, thanks both, Andrew.

    • Thanks for sharing this, Andrew. I know that you are very active on LinkedIn and I have just visited your website.

Thanks, Nigel. But your activities are at least loosely related! As you know I had a good career in music and music education including two published books in those fields still available on Amazon. Then there’s Web Wordsmith. This is not related to either previous career, and I sense that in the UK people are suspicious of “Jacks/Jills of all trades”.

  • I’m beginning a new enterprise, but my previous website is still up and running. Since I’m starting something with a new focus, should I be looking to remove the other site? It does at least verify one part of my cv for potential customers.
Strategically is it a good idea to redo all profiles, remove other websites, etc to avoid confusing people…[Read more]

    • Many of us do several things, Bette. Personally, I think that it is fine to have several websites, for different services. As far as I can tell, it has done me no harm. Kind regards, Nigel PS Either via this thread or by email, by all means tell me what your new enterprise is. 🙂

    • Point taken, Bette. I still think that you should retain the other website and complete it. You are a person of many talents with much to offer. What is more, one never knows what is going to work and what isn’t. The two sites will give you more options.

    • Thanks, Nigel. I think you’re right. No point pretending not to be me!

    Hi Everyone!
    Two questions:
    1) I am working on launching a completely new business idea, and last week purchased the relevant domain names. However owing the cost, I’ve just grabbed the .com versions. Do you feel it’s important to buy up the others? And if so, which ones? There seem to about a dozen of them!

    2) My next step is to decide how much…[Read more]

It does look very useful. Are the workflow management features available in the free version that you’re using? I’m looking for a replacement for my ‘Things to do today’ notebook which was invaluable years ago.

Thanks for this, Nigel. I’ve just had a look at Calendly and it looks interesting. The workflow management facility sounds very useful, particularly for a ‘one (wo)man band’ such as myself.
Is this something that you are using for your own work these days?

I see what you mean re email marketing!
The ones I find irritating are the unsolicited emails offering web design and web app services, usually from abroad. These go straight to my spam folder, but some are quite persistent and seem like they’re telling me off!
I guess getting acquainted with MailChimp (I think there’s a free version if you…[Read more]

  • Morning Nigel!
I’m looking to relaunch my Web Wordsmith business after not being active for a year or two. The plan is to move towards group training via Zoom or some other platform, and to market to corporates and SMEs who would like to develop the skills of their copywriting staff.
I’m thinking that things may well have changed re how to find…[Read more]

    • Thanks for asking about this, Bette.
I suggest that you create a free Calendly account: https://calendly.com
      Learn how to use Calendly.
Block off time in your calendar for the recurring tasks that you have to do each week.
Also, decide which days of the week you want to be available.
You can then use LinkedIn messages to invite people to talk to…[Read more]

    • Yes, we use Calendly for a variety of purposes. For example, scheduling conversations. We are considering upgrading to the paying version, which has several interesting features.

Eventbrite is very good for to do lists. 🙂

Many thanks for these very useful suggestions, Nigel! I particularly like the idea of connecting with local businesses through Facebook. • Hi Nigel.
I’m looking for advice on how to use Facebook to gain work for my web writing business. Web Wordsmith is now based in the Midlands, following a recent relocation. Thanks for this, Nigel. Will share the info with my friend. I think their plan is to do a simple ‘off the peg’ website to provide a presence for people who like to look things up that way. They also plan to continue with Facebook as it’s been so effective, in hopes of keeping the ‘honeymoon period’ you descr…[Read more]

    Hi Nigel
Happy 2018! A friend of mine (who has just started a locally based service business) asked me the other day if she really needed a website? She’s been marketing since last August using only Facebook and her business is booming! How could I use Facebook to do the same for my own web writing business? All the best, Bette

    • I think that people expect to see a website associated with a business. I know a handful of people who don’t have websites and they use LinkedIn or FB instead. However, with any social media platform you are always in their hands. It is normal for a new business to receive a surge of business from family, friends and close contacts. In my…[Read more]
