  • HI Nigel, Have you had good results from the YouTube videos? Just wondering how much difference they are making.

    • So far, we have had over 9 hours of watch time. I am quite surprised about this, as there are only a handful of videos and they are all quite short. Apparently, YouTube likes to have about 35 videos within a Channel, so that it can figure out what the channel is all about and start recommending videos. Therefore, I have quite a bit of work to do!

    Hi Nigel
Blogging is a regular exercise for me, it helps me get set up for the day.

Any pointers and advice as a blogging strategy ?

    • Hi William, I wonder whether you blog with Google in mind? As a blogger myself, I realise that this can add an additional layer of complexity to the blogging process (hence the question).
For example, your most recent blog is entitled ‘Restaurant food is not enough’. I like the blog and it made be think about target market segmentation. The trick…[Read more]

    Hello Marketing Compass

What is the best way to choose keywords for a blog. Sometimes the obvious keywords don’t actually appear in the blog title nor opening sentence?

How many keywords should there be for a blog?

    Thank you.

    David

    • * Try one of the online keyword suggestion tools, for example: https://www.wordtracker.com
      * Also, go to Google search and type in the search term: take a close look at the suggestions that appear in the dropdown
      * If you wish to be found for a given phrase, ideally, use that phrase within the blog title
      * In any event, use the exact keyword…[Read more]

Here are some initial thoughts on creating a YouTube channel, following the relaunch of The Marketing Compass YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/3byunXH
    * If you have had a channel for some time, reconsider your target market. Who, exactly, is your channel aimed at (I have posted a Segmentation video within our channel, that may help)
    * Also: work…[Read more]

    • I do enjoy your talks on copy writing Nigel, the stories flow, they’re light, informative and helpful. Finding the right time to let our own words flow out can be a challenge, sometimes I find they just don’t come, but when I’m in a good place, perhaps by a campfire or siting under a tree, being ready for the moments to capture those words is all…[Read more]

    Hello the Marketing Compass Team

When writing a business blog, to what extent should the blog include a ‘selling sentence’ (eg “Call me if you’d like help with XYZ”). Should we perhaps do it sometimes and only if really relevant to a specific matter?

    Thanks.

    David

    • Yes, I agree with your viewpoint within the second sentence: ‘Should we perhaps do it sometimes and only if really relevant to a specific matter?’ I have often thought about this and the salesperson inside of me wants to sell, sell, sell. However, the world’s most successful bloggers don’t do this.

    How to write effective headlines….

In advertising, nearly six times as many people read the headline as the bodycopy of an advertisement. A good headline should telegraph your message into the mind of the reader.
It will entice them to read the rest of your copy.

In his book ‘Confessions of an Advertising Man’, advertising guru David Ogi…[Read more]

Do you have a benefits list? Your products or services have many features. However, customers do not buy features: they buy benefits. A real benefit is one that exists in the customer’s mind. They experience an ‘Ah Ha!’ moment when they realise how you can help them with a problem that they have. All too often, when I read websites or marketing…[Read more]
