Hi NIgel, in 2021 should I plan for Zoom events or live (in person) events? Thanks Margi

    • I would plan for both, Margi. During the first quarter of 2021, I suggest that you start with Zoom only. However, I would also start to pencil in live events after the vaccines have been rolled out. Live events are quite different from online ones, aren’t they?

    • Thanks, That’s very helpful. Can’t wait to get back to live events!

    • Yes, I know what you mean, Margi. There is nothing quite like meeting someone in person, is there? Having said this, the advantages of virtual events include lower costs (i.e. no need to hire venues) and the ability to attract attendees from much further afield. I think that many enterprises will adopt a hybrid approach: live + online.

  • Does politeness matter any longer? What is your experience of politeness (or the lack of it) when you are buying products or services, either personally or for your business. Do you have a top politeness tip to share with me?

HI Nigel, Do you have any tips for using Zoom? Thanks Margi

    • Hi Margi, I suggest that you setup a test Zoom meeting with a friend. Or you could do this with yourself, if you have two devices. Having started the Zoom meeting, hover your mouse over the Zoom toolbar at foot of your screen and work your way though the various icons and menu items.
Personally, I only use a few of them, i.e. Sound and Video on /…[Read more]

We are making a big product announcement in the next few weeks and looking to maximise our coverage in the press and online. What sort of media collateral do I need for a successful PR campaign?

    • Hi Mike, here is a list for you:
      * Press Room page on your website (visible from the home page, i.e. via the Nav bar)
      * The Press Room page should include a company overview, spokesperson profiles and access to images
      * In due course, press releases should be added there in chronological order (clickable through to separate pages, which each hold…[Read more]

    • Thank you. I’ve created a media page. More photographs required in there. I don’t have any press releases as yet, but I have made provision for these on the page and these will be added as they are produced. I am also creating an off-line pack that we can make for sending to people when they make enquiries as a result of our press attention.

I had an on-line singing lesson last week via Zoom and my teacher booked us free 15 minute session a few days before just to make sure that we could see and hear each other in the right way for singing. This might be really good practice for some other meetings too,

Do you like referrals? How often does this happen? Do you have a system for increasing the number of referrals that you receive every month? If you do, please tell me about it. If not, you are welcome to ask for some referral generation ideas.

  • We were very sorry to hear the sad news that David Knowles-Leak, a long standing member of The Marketing Compass community passed away earlier this week. We will miss him.

    • I am so sad to hear that. I only met David online via one of Nigel’s training courses, but I was a close colleague to his son, Mike, many years ago.

    • Yes, sad news. I had known David for many years and I will miss him.

For those of you with WordPress sites, a new scam has turned up from claiming money for using their photographs on site. Its all a fake!

    • Thanks for sharing this, Ken. Getty Images are well known for presenting invoices with regards to images that have copyright. We use Pexels: https://www.pexels.com for images. Some of our members take their own photographs.

Do you have you a list of key messages?
The central objective is to differentiate your enterprise.
Half a dozen messages should be fine.
Once they have been agreed, they can be used within most marketing pieces.
If you share your top key message via this thread, I will provide you with some feedback.

Have experienced an amazing online conference platform, https://hopin.to , after giving a 90 minute conference presentation to 150 plus attendees around the world. It functions just like a real conference with on-stage and backstage features, socializing area, and the ability for an organiser to manage things. If you want to deliver with multiple…[Read more]

    • This looks very interesting Ken and thank you for sharing it. I can see how it is different from other platforms. The only challenge could be the pricing, as it appears to start at US$99 per month.
