In a complex society such as ours, what is success and what does it mean to you? For some, the answer is more money and more possessions. However, for most of us, true success is founded on happiness and well being.

A key aspect of success is the number and depth of relationships you have. For independent professionals and business owners, this is where networking can make a significant contribution to happiness. Getting to know other entrepreneurs who face the same challenges as you do – and building professional relationships with them – can be deeply gratifying, on an emotional level.

Why did you decide to launch your own business? Is it something that you always dreamed of doing? Would you ever go back to corporate life (if this is where you started)?

What, exactly, does motivate you? To what extent is the answer ‘money’, as opposed to the satisfaction of walking your own path, making your own decisions and proving to yourself that you can succeed – especially in tough economic times?

To be effective in sales and marketing, a healthy mind in a healthy body is clearly a good thing. Running your own business is like a marathon: stamina is required during the journey.

Where does marketing fit into all of this? To begin with, marketing can help to improve the life expectancy of any business – no matter how large or small. In the 21st century, for SMEs, marketing is more to do with knowledge and time than it is to do with budgets and money.

Successful business owners invest time and thought in marketing, in terms of planning, product development, pricing, promotion, penpersonship (I am stretching my Ps!) and processes.

The majority of business owners I have met over the years don’t want to become millionaires (naturally – there are exceptions!) In general, they want to earn a decent living and they don’t want to have to worry about money (which, of course, can be highly stressful). The question to ask yourself is whether you are aiming at specific financial targets and whether you are measuring your progress. As the old saying goes: “What gets measured, gets done.”

We will be discussing success and motivation at the Masterclass event on June 23rd 2011 and at future events. It would be great to see you there.

I wish you all the best with everything you do!
